WOOLSTON COMMUNITY CENTRE
Woolston Community centre news
|
Woolston Community Centre is a self-supporting facility that relies entirely on hire income and fundraising to remain open and at the heart of our community.
Coming later this year to your community centre we are pleased to present a live music night to aid our ongoing fund raising efforts. On Saturday night 28th September 2024, our guests will be five piece folk band Beggar’s Belief. You can expect a very wide variety of songs chosen for maximum enjoyment, and entertainment for the audience (and themselves!). Read about them at beggarsbelief8.wixsite.com/my-site or link to their Facebook page from there. They will be supported by two superb musicians, Cath Watkins and Nic Bradford. They are a fiddle and guitar duo whose material ranges from graceful seventeenth century country dances through jolly English session tunes to swinging jazz and blues standards of the thirties and forties. Boundaries can get a little blurred at times! Subtle lighting, cafe atmosphere and the cheapest bar in town (bring your own drinks and glasses) and to ensure maximum enjoyment, we guarantee there will be no flashing lights or special effects! How can you resist? Doors open 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm. Admission will be free and a collection will be taken on the night. The costs of keeping this centre open keep rising at an alarming rate so please bear in mind that we need every penny we can get! Audience capacity is limited so you will have to book a seat. If you want to be there, please contact Barry or Maureen on 023 8043 2216 or e-mail [email protected] in advance. No booking = no admission! Woolston Community Centre is managed by a team of volunteers from Woolston Community Association (Charity No. 302000). All proceeds from the event will go towards maintenance and improvements at the centre. |

Volunteers needed:
The Community Centre garden features mature shrubs and an ever changing variety of flowers, giving a colourful display all year round. Congratulations to all of the garden team for the amazing transformation of a derelict space and special thanks to Ray Sturgess* (aka the king of the plants) who spent many hours selecting and providing just the right varieties of plants to suit the seasons.
If you would like to volunteer to help with the upkeep of this garden please email: [email protected]

Sadly, we must record the news that Ray passed away on 10th August 2022 after a long struggle with illness. His efforts since the establishment of the community garden are the stuff of legend and his presence will be sorely missed.
A plaque is now in place on the garden wall, to mark Ray's dedicated and tireless contribution to this project.
