WCA COMMUNITY GARDEN AT THE CENTRE
If you have been to, or passed by Woolston Community Centre, then you may have noticed our community garden in the corner by Weston Grove Road. The garden features mature shrubs and an ever changing variety of flowers, giving a colourful display all year round. Congratulations to all of the garden team for the amazing transformation of a derelict space and special thanks to our next door neighbour Ray Sturgess* (aka the king of the plants) who spent many hours selecting and providing just the right varieties of plants to suit the seasons.
It all started back in 2013 when The Princes Trust cleared most of the area, laid a paving slab path and built four raised beds. A team of volunteers was formed to maintain and develop the garden and since then the whole area has been cleared and additional paths and additional raised beds have been constructed. There is also a fenced off compound for children, which was created by Woolston Adventure Pre-school.
The brickwork to the back wall was always in a poor state of repair and in 2019 this was repointed by operatives from 4D, the contractors for the new sewage works. They also added shingle paths and edging around the two larger raised beds.
All of this work was carried out free of charge as a contribution to the Community Centre, for which we are extremely grateful.
The timber boxing to the four original raised beds built in 2013 had begun to rot, so in 2019 the garden team rebuilt them in more durable pressure treated timber.
All funds for the garden are provided by the community centre out of hiring income.
If you would like to help in some way or join the community garden team, please leave a message on the "contact us" page of this website.
* Sadly we must record the news that Ray passed away on 10th August 2022 after a long struggle with illness. His efforts since the establishment of the community garden are the stuff of legend and his presence will be sorely missed. A plaque is now in place on the garden wall, to mark Ray's dedication and tireless contributions to this project.
